Sheese-Burton to resign as clerk on Oct. 7 - before early voting, election

Owen County Clerk Lesliann Sheese-Burton has tendered her resignation as county clerk on Friday.

Owen County Republican Party Chairman Tony Voelker said that in Sheese-Burton’s resignation letter her departure is effective on Oct. 7. Voelker also said that Sheese-Burton indicated that she has found other employment in advance of the end of her term.

Sheese-Burton lost in the Republican primary in May to current county treasurer Diane Stutsman. There were no Democratic candidates on the ticket.

Sheese-Burton’s last day as clerk comes less than a week before early voting is set to begin for this year’s general election, which takes place Nov. 8.

Stutsman offered the following: “I’ve fielded many inquiries over the weekend once news of Clerk Sheese-Burton’s alleged resignation started to circulate. I will not speculate and will simply wait along with everyone else for any official announcement. Regardless, as it relates to my official duties my position is clear. Voters placed their trust in me to serve as treasurer almost eight years ago. As I’ve stated many times in the past, it is my intention to fulfill my commitment. If I am fortunate enough to be elected clerk, I will turn my attention to that office and those duties in January 2023. For now, my focus is on the upcoming property tax collection and ensuring as smooth a transition as possible for the next treasurer.”

Voelker said that there will be a caucus and that the date has not yet been released publically.
