A chain of gas stations with several locations in central Ohio is selling a high-ethanol gasoline blend for $1.99 this week.

Sheetz is offering the deal on Unleaded 88 — which is 15% ethanol — through Nov. 28.

Most gas sold in Ohio is 10% ethanol.

The high-ethanol blend is usually around 30 cents cheaper than regular unleaded at Sheetz, which has heavily promoted the fuel as an affordable alternative to conventional gasoline.

Central Ohio has 19 Sheetz gas stations, 15 of which are in Franklin County.

The first Sheetz in the Columbus area opened in Delaware in April 2021, and the company expanded rapidly in the year and a half since.

Unleaded 88 can result in slightly lower gas mileage, but also gives off fewer planet-warming carbon emissions.

Experts say the difference is small, and the fuel is worth the price as long as it is at least 5% cheaper than regular unleaded.

The EPA has approved unleaded 88 for use in passenger vehicles built after 2001.
