Sheetz lowers gas prices to $1.99 for Unleaded 88 for Thanksgiving. What you need to know.

People traveling for Thanksgiving will have one thing to be thankful for: cheaper gas at Sheetz.

The company has dropped the price of Unleaded 88 gasoline to $1.99 a gallon for Thanksgiving week, according to a news release. The promotion starts today and is available until 11:59 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27.

The offer is available at all of the Sheetz locations that carry Unleaded 88 in Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, the release states.

This is the latest promotion by Sheetz. Over the summer, it lowered some of its prices for the Fourth of July. It drew long lines as drivers waited to fill up.

What is Unleaded 88 gasoline and is it safe?

"Unleaded 88 is a fuel blend that includes 15% ethanol," Daniel Ciolkosz, associate research professor of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Penn State University, said last year. "It has an octane rating of 88, which is why it’s called 'Unleaded 88.'"

He recommends that drivers check their owner's manual or manufacturer website to make sure cheaper fuels is safe for them.

"All cars manufactured in 2001 or newer are approved to use Unleaded 88," Ciolkosz said.

What's the current price of gas?

The national average for a regular gallon of gas is $3.30, according to AAA.

In Pennsylvania, the average price is $3.59, AAA says.

Gas prices now are lower than they were a year ago.

The average price for a regular gallon of gas in the Keystone State was $4.03 at this time last year, according to AAA.
