Shelby High School student wins first-ever in-state Madden tournament

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Cleveland County student is now the state champion in the Madden 24 competition.

Synsir Pettis is a 10th-grade drone technology student and a member of the new eSports team at Shelby High School.

He took home $2,400 in cash for his win in the North Carolina varsity eSports and STEM league state championship.

The event took place on Feb. 17 at the Swarm Fieldhouse in Greensboro. Synsir was able to compete for the state championship by playing in previous tournaments and completing STEM activities.

This was the first-ever Madden 24 contest for the Varsity eSports and STEM League.
