For more than a year, We Promote Community Success podcast has been highlighting people doing good things in Cleveland County.

Now, the founder of the podcast, Jimmy Hall, or DJ Dr. Jim as he's more commonly known, is hosting a Christmas event to honor those people and raise funds for future community work.

On Friday, the Christmas Community Extravaganza 2023 will be held at the Cleveland County fairgrounds from 6 to 10 p.m. Dinner will be served and children will have an opportunity to see Santa and receive a gift.

Ticket are $30 for singles and $50 a couple.

Hall said the money raised will help with the next Unity in the Community event planned for in the spring and with some other ideas he has for 2024.

For more information or to purchase a ticket, call 704-974-1593.

Tickets can also be purchased at WPCS Shelby Podcast Radio Station at 701 Suttle St., Shelby, or they can be purchased the night of the event.

Hall said there will be six speakers at the event, including Senator Ted Alexander, Rodney Borders with Cleveland County Schools, Christine Cribb with the Chamber of Commerce and three others.

Hall said they would have speakers, serve dinner and hand out presents.

“We’re going to be serving dinner and then going to present the awards for everybody that has been on our podcast,” Hall said. “And then once the speakers speak, we are going to have Santa to come and surprise the kids and give away Christmas toys.”

He said they would be honoring all the people who have been on the podcast over the past six months.

“We have about 44 to 45 recipients,” Hall said.

Some of the recipients include Rev. Nathaniel Craig of Walls Memorial Baptist Church, Pamela Mitchell with Mitchell’s Accounting Services, Joshua Propst with the Boys and Girls Club, Scooter Lawrence, the women’s basketball coach at Cleveland Community College and Betsy Harnage, Cleveland County Register of Deeds.

"Those are some of the recipients. We're going to present them with awards for being on our podcast," he said.

Hall said they will also be highlighting and honoring Joresa Lawrence, the 2023 Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year.

Gifts will be handed out from the Angel Tree, which was supported by multiple people and businesses in the county.

"We are probably anticipating anywhere from 150 to 200 people," Hall said. "We're expecting a pretty good crowd."

He said they held an event at Thanksgiving, and Walmart Distribution helped them give away 100 turkeys.

Hall said they have had a lot of support, including from Washington Outreach Ministry, Gaston Community Action and others.
