Shelby restaurant inspections: April and May critical violations

The following restaurant inspections with critical violations were conducted by the Shelby City Health Department in April and May:

Napoli's Pizza, 126 Broadway St., Shelby, April 1. Food equipment surfaces not cleaned at required frequency (critical repeat). Observed build-up of food debris on slicer. Slicer is required to be cleaned and sanitized every four hours of continuous use. Correct immediately.

Weber's Bar, 51 W. Main St., Shelby, April 22. Handwashing sink not accessible (critical repeat). Observed egg carton and plastic bags stored in handwashing sink. Hand sink shall be available at all times to properly wash hands to prevent a foodborne illness.

Napoli's Pizza, 126 Broadway St., Shelby, May 3. Food equipment surfaces not cleaned at required frequency (critical repeat). Build up of food debris on slicer. Violations not corrected. If not corrected at reinspection, facility will be required to come in for an office hearing.

Shelby Senior High School, 1 Whippet Way, Shelby, May 5. Improper bare-hand contact with RTE (ready-to-eat) foods (critical, corrected during inspection) Apples put out for consumer self service that were not protected from bare hand contact which could cause a foodborne illness. Employees saran wrapped apples.

Ivory Bean Coffee House, 44 E. Main St., Shelby, May 18. Handwashing sink not accessible (critical). Observed "sink out of use" sign. Repair so employees can properly wash their hands to keep pathogens from contaminating food and food surfaces which could cause a foodborne illness. Correct by May 20.

R. Chandat LLC, 172 N. Gamble St., Shelby, May 24. Person in charge (PIC) unable to demonstrate knowledge by having no critical violations (critical). Correct by May 25. Food employee(s) did not wash hands when required (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed cook take food to front hot holding area, touch numerous non-food surfaces and not remove gloves and wash hands before replacing gloves. Handwashing sink is being used for purposes other than handwashing (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed small glass food items in sink. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging, and segregation (critical). Observed frozen chicken in zip lock bags in Berg freezer that were stored above ready-to-eat foods. To prevent a cross contamination which could cause a foodborne illness, raw foods shall be stored in order of their cooking temperature requirements. Unsafe, adulterated or not honestly presented food not discarded or properly reconditioned (critical, corrected during inspection). Dented cans on shelf and TCS foods not maintained at 41 degrees or below to prevent the growth of pathogens which could cause a food borne illness. Manager removed and discarded nearly 100 items, including milk, sour cream, and cheese. TCS foods not being cold held at the proper temperature (critical). Self serve reach-in cooler not maintaining 41 degrees or below. Manager discarded TCS foods. Refrigerated, ready-to-eat, TCS foods not properly date marked (critical). Observed white American cheese in Berg refrigerator without date marking. Correct by May 25. Improper storage of poisonous or toxic materials (critical). Observed chemicals above clean food containers on wire shelf. Correct by May 25.

R. Chandat LLC, 172 N. Gamble St., Shelby, May 25. Food not properly protected from contamination by separation, packaging, and segregation (critical, corrected during inspection). Observed frozen chicken in zip lock bags in Berg freezer that were stored above ready-to-eat foods. Chicken was moved below RTE foods.
