Jackson Martin is not one to turn down a business opportunity.

A teacher at Shelby High School, Martin has his hand in several different business ventures. So when a friend convinced him to carve out holes on his bed and breakfast property to host disc golf tournaments, Martin decided to pursue it.

“This was something my next-door neighbor was doing and playing weekly,” said Martin. “I knew he had been playing for years. He invited me, but I only played a couple times over the last three years. It was something I didn’t have time to do, but then I realized I had the space for others to come play.”

Born and raised in Lattimore, Martin teaches carpentry by day and runs several companies in his spare time, including a small DJ business called Wolfman Entertainment and decided to play off that when he began brainstorming names for his newest venture.

“I probably spent 20 hours trying to come up with a name,” said Martin. “Then I realized I could just go with Wolfman.”

He landed on Wolfman Disc Golf Club.

Martin also owns the Hunt House Bed and Breakfast on Westlee Street in Lattimore and figured the property would be the perfect location to host disc golf games and tournaments.

“I had walking trails as an amenity, and I was already having to keep the area manicured for the trails and a friend of mine had got me into playing disc golf at Gardner-Webb. So I figured I would build a nine-hole course out here as an addition. Once I got that built, all the other disc golfers said if you build nine more holes, you will have one of the nicest ones in the area,” he said.

Martin said people have come from as far as Raleigh to test their skills on the course.

“We have almost 50 members already, and we’ve only opened up the membership for this next three months since January,” said Martin. “We’ve had about 100 people from cities like Asheville and Charlotte come and do the day pass since December.”

Within two weeks of posting about the tourney, nearly 75 people signed up.

“AJ Carey and his wife are two local pros from Boiling Springs,” said Martin. “That is their full-time job. They sponsored the event. They put up an extra $750 cash prize to be split among the pros. I appreciate those who gave their time to make the event successful.”
