Shelbyville high school basketball player hospitalized after collapsing during game

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Shelbyville Central High School basketball player was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Tuesday night after suffering a medical emergency during a game.

In a statement Wednesday, the Bedford County School System said the athlete, Kyler Trice, collapsed in the locker room during halftime of the district tournament game against Lincoln County, which was being played in the Falcon’s gymnasium in Fayetteville.

The cause of the medical emergency is still unknown at this time, but authorities said Trice required “life saving measures.” Four nurse practitioners who were at the game reportedly helped Trice and used an AED device before he was hospitalized.

“We thank the team at Lincoln County for their quick action that no doubt helped save him,” said Bedford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tammy Garrett.

The game was suspended at halftime with a score of 28-27 and Lincoln County in the lead. At this time, the district plans to resume the game from the start of the third quarter at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25.

In a social media post, Lincoln County High School announced that there will be a student-led prayer vigil for Trice in the school parking lot an hour before the game resumes. Instead of gate admission, donations will be accepted for Trice and his family.

“Extra counselors are on hand this morning at SCHS to support our players and coaches,” Garrett added. “Please keep this student-athlete and his family in your thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery.”
