On the Shelf: Celebrating the season with reindeer, unicorns ... and Yeti
Take the edge off the holiday schedule this month with some extra cuddles and story times. There are some wonderful new tales to give this season.
“So Much Snow” by Hyunmin Park (Sourcebooks, ages 4 and older)
Probably the most unique book of the season, this one has the binding at the top and includes fold out pages and an immersive, snowy experience. It is nearly wordless, so it provides a great chance for big imaginations to fill in the blanks. Curl up with this one on a snowy day, add a cup of hot chocolate, and have a story time to remember.
“Yetis Are the Worst!” by Alex Willan (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, ages 4 – 8)
Gilbert the Goblin is back! This time, he’s on the hunt for the elusive Yeti, and of course, the trail is just a little out of sight. This is the third “Worst” book – don’t miss Dragons and Unicorns – and it is full of wintery laughs.
“How to Catch a Reindeer” by Alice Walstead and Andy Elkerton (Sourcebooks, ages 4 and older)
Giggles will come with this one, as little ones recognize some of the ways parents and kids try to get one of Santa’s reindeer helpers. Maybe carrots will work? Find out, and then learn some facts about real live reindeer.
“Little Red Sleigh” by Erin Guendelsberger, illustrated by Elizaveta Tretyakova (Sourcebooks, ages 4 and older)
Too small, too young, too slow? This beautifully illustrated tale of a little sleigh takes all the impatience of childhood and shows kids that they can make a difference in the lives of others.
“Mendel’s Hanukkah Mess Up” by Chana and Larry Stiefel, illustrated by Daphna Awadish (Kalaniot Books)
Learn all about Hanukkah with this sweet tale of how anything, even a mistake, can lead to a miracle. After the story, don’t miss the holiday information, including a recipe for potato latkes that parents and kids can make together.
“Unicorn Christmas: A Sparkly Holiday Adventure”by Diana Murray, illustrated by Luke Flowers (Sourcebooks, ages 4 and older)
There is a lot going on in this book. It captures the frenetic energy of a kid on Christmas, along with a sweet dose of unicorn magic. It’s perfect for a classroom story time or anytime little ones need to get their wiggles and giggles out.
