Shelf Cloud Barrels Over Central Illinois Farm Amid Thunderstorm Watch

A series of “severe” storms were projected to bring gusty winds and rain to central Illinois and nearby areas on Tuesday, August 20, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

This video shows swiftly moving misty clouds, followed by dark storm clouds, above Hillsboro, Illinois. As the dark clouds pass over the camera, wind whips through the crops on either side.

Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency, which shared the video on Facebook, said the video shows a “leading cold front shelf cloud.” The agency reported wind gusts up to 50 mph in Hillsboro.

The NWS said winds could reach 60 mph and that the storm could produce “large” hail and an isolated tornado.
