Halloween books are just right for this month, of course, but little readers can actually enjoy them all year. The abundance of seasonal board books means parents and caregivers can talk about holidays, point to pumpkins and leaves, and talk about the seasons too. Enjoy!

October board books:

  • “The Wheels on the Costume” by Cindy Jin, illustrated by Lauren Lowen (Simon & Schuster Kids) Showing costumes for children of all abilities, this beautiful interactive book includes everyone in the trick-or-treat fun.

  • “Dia de Muertos” by Dori Elys, illustrated by Alicia Mas (Little Simon) Get ready for Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Nov. 1 – 2 with this bright, bilingual, lift-the-flap book.

  • “Apple vs. Pumpkin” by Jeffrey Burton, illustrated by Lydia Jean (Little Simon) The fall treats battle it out, and little readers will probably get the giggles. Apple cider? Pumpkin pie? Enjoy all it while fall lasts.

  • “EEK! Halloween!” by Sandra Boynton (Boynton Bookworks) This classic book is more than the sum of its parts. Those silly chickens are back in board book form, and their nerves about Halloween might be just what unsure little ones need to hear.

  • “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” by Charles M. Schulz (Simon Spotlight) Speaking of classics, this one is now an oversized board book for older littles – perfect for preschool story time.

“The Book Crew Needs You” by Vicky Fang, illustrated by Saoirse Lou (Sourcebooks, ages 4 and older) The Book Crew can’t do it alone. This highly interactive story has kids tapping and tipping the book, shouting answers and moving the story forward when they follow the prompts. Fun for at-home story time or a classroom read.

“Halloween in the Orchard” by Phyllis Alsdurf, illustrated by Lisa Hunt (Beaming Books, ages 3 – 8) This is a fantastic read-aloud if your family is going to a fall festival, corn maze, orchard or any Halloween group event. It lets kids know some of what they can expect and helps get them ready. The book also includes craft instructions and a wonderful “find the scarecrow” activity.

“Hide and Seek, Nuts to Eat” by Tracy C. Gold, illustrated by Nancy Leschnikoff (Sourcebooks, ages 4 and older) Are the squirrels and their hoarding driving you bananas? This tale shows little readers why they are hiding and seeking everything in sight this time of year.
