Shenandoah fire department, Red Cross offering free smoke alarms

Mar. 14—SHENANDOAH — With the recent rash of arson fires in the borough, Fire Chief Richard Examitas is urging all residents to get smoke alarms in their homes.

The alarms are now being offered free of charge.

Examitas said that residents can take advantage of the American Red Cross "Sound the Alarm — Save a Life" campaign that provides free alarms to anyone interested.

The chief said that working smoke alarms can cut in half the risk of death from fires in the home.

With that in mind, the Red Cross is rallying volunteers, fire departments and others in getting the message out about the importance of having working smoke alarms.

"Every home needs working smoke alarms," the chief said. "They save lives."

Examitas said that in Shenandoah, smoke alarms will be distributed between 5 and 8 p.m. March 22 at borough hall, 15 W. Washington St., or at the Shenandoah Valley School District office, 805 W. Centre St.

Installations will be done by members of the fire department and workers from the Red Cross.

Preregistration is required.

Anyone wanting a smoke alarm should call 570-462-1918, Examitas said.
