Shenandoah shooting victim identified, details scarce

Mar. 25—SHENANDOAH — Borough police are investigating a Wednesday morning shooting that sent one person to a hospital.

Shenandoah Police Chief George Carado identified the victim as Quran Naim Rash Newsome, 26, whose last known address was in Scranton.

Carado said police were called to 26 N. West St. around 9:30 a.m. for a report of a shooting and identified Newsome as the victim.

He said Newsome was taken to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, by ambulance for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg and later signed himself out of the hospital.

Carado offered no additional information, saying only "there is absolutely no risk to the community."

Police officers from Mahanoy City, West Mahanoy Township and Frackville, along with state police troopers, responded to the initial call.

Police closed the unit block of North West Street while they investigated with the assistance of a state police Forensic Services Unit.
