🌱 Sheriff Dies From Gunshot After Argument + Houston Food Bank

Here are the top five stories in Houston today:

1. Local companies in Houston say they will maintain their vaccination policies despite last week’s Supreme Court ruling that struck down the Biden administration’s vaccine mandate for firms with more than 100 employees. Software company Hewlett Packard Enterprises says employees who decline to be vaccinated are required to work from home. (Houston Chronicle)

2. The population in Katy climbed 55% from 2010 to 2020 and is ranked 3rd on Opendoor's new list of the country's 10 most popular ZIP codes for homebuyers. A general manager at Opendoor says the school selection, employment center access, and parks are responsible for the growth. (CultureMap Houston)

3. A Harris County sheriff's deputy died in the hospital after a gunshot wound to the head, which her boyfriend says was self-inflicted. Her boyfriend is a Houston fire fighter. The incident happened when the couple had an argument after leaving Kung Fu Saloon on Washington Ave. in a pickup truck. Houston Police is investigating the incident and has yet to confirm whether the deputy shot herself. (Fox 26 Houston)

4. Bank of America says it will make a $100 donation to Houston Food Bank for every local employee that gets a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot and notifies the bank before the end of January. For every $1 donated to the Houston Food Bank, they can provide three meals for neighbors in need. That means each booster shot will provide 300 meals to individuals and families throughout its 18-county coverage area in southeast Texas. (CW39)

5. The University of Houston-Downtown is welcoming journalist and scholar Nikole Hannah-Jones for a virtual discussion that is free and open for all on February 9th. Audience members will engage in a question and answer session with Hannah-Jones and hear from Houston illustrator Nikkolas Smith, who collaborated with the journalist on the children's book "The 1619 Project: Born on the Water."
