Sheriff identifies 40-year-old man who died kayaking in Avila Beach

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who died after falling out of his kayak in Avila Beach on Sunday evening.

Christopher Neil Chisholm, 40, of Burbank, was kayaking with a friend in the ocean near Avila Beach at around 5 p.m. when he fell out, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Chisholm’s friend paddled over to him but found him unresponsive in the water, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Sunday.

The friend then paddled to shore and reported the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office detectives, Cal Fire, Harbor Patrol officers, the California Highway Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard then searched for Chisholm in the water.

At around 7 p.m., Chisholm’s body was found, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time, the death appears to be accidental,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Monday news release. “An autopsy will be conducted to determine manner and cause of death.”
