Sheriff: Man who fled into pond to avoid police, prompting water rescue search, arrested

A 40-year-old man who allegedly fled into a pond to avoid arrest was apprehended Friday, according to the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

Mathias Jones, 40, of New Miami, Ohio, was arrested on a breaking and entering warrant, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Officials said Jones was seen by deputies Thursday fleeing from the 4000 block of Hamilton Trenton Road and entering the water to avoid apprehension.

While it was suspected Jones made it out of the water safely, deputies and other emergency personnel searched the water for hours Thursday for "precautionary reasons," the sheriff's office said.
