Sheriff: Man kidnaps Georgia couple, attempts to shoot man 3 times before fleeing to Alabama

Police say an Alabama man went on a violent crime spree in metro Atlanta, including a terrifying home invasion where he tied up the homeowners and kidnapped them.

Investigators say he also shot someone in Fulton County, and when police in Alabama took him into custody, they say he had just kidnapped two girls.

“It’s very disturbing and it kind of makes me uncomfortable,” a woman who lives along Waterworks Road in Coweta County told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes. “We don’t stay here permanently, but we spend a lot of time here on this land, working and doing certain things, and sometimes overnight.”

The woman, who asked not to be identified, lives along the same street where police said Michael Butler, 35, kidnapped a couple and forced them into their own car.

Coweta County deputies told Fernandes that the suspect forced the woman to tie up the man and drive him toward the interstate.

The woman convinced Butler that they needed gas, so he pulled into a gas station. That’s when the woman jumped out, ran and called 911.

Investigators say Butler jumped in the driver’s seat with the man still tied up in the passenger seat and brought him back to the couple’s home.

Deputies say Butler tried to shoot the tied-up man at least three times but the gun jammed.

Butler left and headed back to Alabama. That’s where police in Prattville, Alabama arrested Butler.

They say he kidnapped two young Alabama girls. Now he’s facing several charges in Alabama and Coweta County.

“It just puts it into perspective, right? You never think that something like that can happen so close to where you are and to hear that story so graphically and to know that happened literally less than a mile away, that is very disturbing,” the neighbor said.

Butler is also accused of shooting someone in Fulton County. Fernandes is working to learn more about that incident.
