Sheriff's Department announces the 'In the Line of Duty Death' of Detective Armando Cantu

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced Thursday in the line of duty death of Detective Armando Cantu.

Sheriff’s officials took to Twitter to say the 14-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department died on Nov. 18 from a “work-related illness.”

“Detective Cantu is survived by his loving family, and many friends at the Sheriff’s Department,” sheriff’s officials posted. “Please keep Detective Armando Cantu and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Cantu was a Marine Corps veteran whose sheriff’s career included assignments at several stations. He was most recently assigned to the Narcotics Division, sheriff’s officials said.

Corporal Danny Garcia with the Sheriff’s Department posted on Twitter, “Absolutely devastating and heartbreaking news again. Rest In Peace Detective Cantu. I will miss you my brother and you will never be forgotten Sir.”

“Sending my deepest condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of Detective Cantu. Rest In Peace," First District Supervisor Paul Cook posted to Twitter.

An online obituary by Dignity Memorial said 43-year-old Armando Cantu Jr. was born in Texas and resided in Twentynine Palms.

Memories and expressions of sympathy were invited to be shared at www.mtviewsanbernardino.com for the Cantu Jr. family, Dignity Memorial said.

On Thursday night, Sheriff’s told the Daily Press they were looking into possibly sharing further information on Cantu.
