A Rancho Cucamonga sheriff’s deputy was in stable condition after being struck twice by gunfire by a suspect who neighbors reported as suspicious.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported that at 11:43 p.m. on Saturday, a deputy responded to a call for service in the 5700 block of Sycamore Court.

The area is located north of Interstate 210 and west of Haven Avenue, near Chaffey College

Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a subject and was struck twice by gunfire from the susject, who was later identified as Nicholas Dane Campbell, 35, a convicted felon.

The deputy returned fire as the suspect fled on foot.

The injured deputy used his radio to inform sheriff's officials that he had been shot. He also provided a description of the suspect.

Emergency personnel arrived and rendered medical aid to the deputy and arranged for the Ontario Police Department to airlift him to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center for treatment.

During an early morning press conference at the hospital, Sheriff Shannon Dicus reported that the deputy, a five-year department veteran, was in stable condition.

Dicus told the deputy that he was proud of him and for his response during the incident, including having the presence of mind, under the circumstances, to call in the suspect’s description.

Campbell, who was not injured, was arrested and taken into custody a short time later. He was on parole in Northern California for carjacking, according to sheriff’s officials.

Campbell is being held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga with bail set at $1 million. He is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court, booking records show.
