Heidi Bartlett had grabbed a handgun at her husband's suggestion before the couple went outside after hearing a noise that had their dogs barking and jumping at the door, according to the release. The handgun discharged just after they exited the residence.

The bullet struck Matthew Bartlett in the upper left leg, then entered his right leg just above the knee, the release said. He received treatment at Reid Health.

Cambridge City Police Department, Hagerstown Fire Department, Reid Health EMS, Cambridge City Fire Department and Wayne County Emergency Communications assisted during the investigation.
