Sheriff's office: One killed, one hurt in crash near Freeport

One person was killed and another hurt in a crash in Stephenson County early Thursday morning.

The Stephenson County Sheriff's Office said the two-vehicle happened in the area of North Davis Road, about a half mile north of Walnut Grove Road in rural Davis, Illinois.

The sheriff's office said a vehicle being driven by 19-year-old Darion Wheeler, of Freeport, crossed the center line and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Both vehicles rolled over and the driver of the other vehicle, a 51-year-old man from Davis, was ejected from his vehicle and later died at the scene, authorities said.

The driver's name will be released once family is notified.

Authorities said Wheeler has serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said it appears driving while impaired may be a factor in the crash and charges could be announced following the investigation of the crash.
