The Monroe County Sheriff's Office recently announced the addition of a volunteer chaplain program.

The program is comprised of eight chaplains from various denominations who provide pastoral services to sworn and civilian staff and their families, participate in department ceremonies and meetings, accompany enforcement members on duty, and perform other related services. When requested, they may also counsel members and their families, visit sick or injured members and officiate at department funerals.

Chaplains are available to assist members at any time, during any tragedy or emergency. The services of a chaplain may also be made available to residents impacted by crisis events (e.g. accident victims, victims of a crime, death investigations and residents displaced by fire, etc.). Each chaplain must complete basic chaplain protocols and skill development in death notifications, suicide assessment and survivor care, and ministering to those affected by grief and loss.

Each chaplain must also be certified in crisis response and Critical Incident Stress Management.
