Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has given us a disappointing update on the show's future, admitting there are no "immediate plans" for a revival.

The BBC series has been off-air for nearly three years, though as things stand it seems we won't be seeing Benedict Cumberbatch's detective on our screens again anytime soon.

"You could go back," Gatiss told the Radio Times, "but there are no immediate plans."

Well, let's hope we do go back at some point in the future, though with Gatiss and co-creator Steven Moffat's Dracula in the pipeline, it seems they've got quite a lot on their hands.

If Sherlock does come back, Moriarty actor Andrew Scott would like to his character return, although he echoed Gatiss's comments about the show's future.

"I think everybody's sort of doing their own separate thing just at the moment," he told Digital Spy. "I know Stephen and Mark have done a version of Dracula which I'm looking forward to seeing.

"For me, the door is never fully closed. It's closed at the moment, but that doesn't mean it can't be opened at some point in the future. But it's definitely not something that's on the agenda in the foreseeable future."

As for how his character could return following his death in season two, Scott mused: "I don’t know. No. It depends. I would just listen to what their idea was, and just put forward a couple of my suggestions.

"I feel very protective of him. I'm very proud of what we did on that show. If it's the right time, we'll all talk about it again."

He added: "But at the moment, I do think it's provided such great opportunities for everybody in the show. So everybody's got to do their own thing. But the idea of doing that at some point in the future is not an unhappy one."
