SHERWOOD IN THE FOREST WITH ROSIE: Winter wonderland on Gannett Hill

Rosie got wind that Bristol Mountain started snowmaking. Since she hasn’t waxed her skis yet, we headed to another high point in the Bristol Hills — Ontario County Park on Gannett Hill. We were looking for a safe, snowy, woodsy place to walk during hunting season and this was it.

Ontario County Park actually covers 410 acres of open lands and woods. We stayed within the central section of the park where the pavilions and pond are, to be safe. Of course you can venture far from the park on the Bristol Hill Trail, which is part of the 900-plus mile Finger Lakes Trail System. The Bristol Hills Trail winds over 50 miles from its northern terminus at Ontario County Park, continues through Naples, and on to its southern terminus at the main Finger Lakes/North Country Trail near Mitchellsville in Steuben County.

At Ontario County Park, Rosie scooped up her share of fresh snow and howled at some cross country skiers. Kids were having fun sledding down the hill behind the park’s fish pond, too.

A reminder that winter can be fun.
