Nokomis' Emma Sneddon wins The State Journal-Register's athlete of the week poll

Emma Sneddon of Nokomis won The State Journal-Register's athlete of the week poll.

The senior point guard generated 43% or 1,188 votes to come away with the win. Pana's Devon Pebbles took second with 30% (831 votes) while Beardstown's Isaac Brockschmidt was third with 19% (522 votes).

The poll closed at noon on Friday. Information about the nominees is below. Jaycee Smith of Pleasant Plains won last week's poll.

Isaac Brockschmidt, Beardstown, boys basketball

The junior guard shot 7 of 8 from the free throw line and converted two 3s to wound up with 21 points in a 58-51 win over Rushville-Industry on Thursday.

Payton Cook, Lincoln, boys basketball

The senior forward produced 13 points and eight rebounds in a 42-35 nonconference win over Decatur Eisenhower at Roy S. Anderson Gymnasium on Saturday. That lifted the Railsplitters to 19-4 overall and extended their winning streak to five games.

Cole Edie, Auburn, wrestling

The senior needed just 2 minutes, 47 seconds to win three heavyweight matches at the Rich Lovellette Invitational in Litchfield over the weekend. He pinned Harrisburg's Javier Horton in 1:45 in the quarterfinals of the 285-pound weight class then pinned West Frankfort's Braxton Chance in 50 seconds. His title bout match against Roxana's Chase Allen was the quickest yet with a 12-second pin. Auburn won the team title.

Maggie Fleischli, Sacred Heart-Griffin, girls basketball

The junior forward Fleischli tallied game-highs 14 points and 13 rebounds in a 45-37 victory over Southeast to cement the program's fourth straight City girls basketball tournament title at the Bank of Springfield Center on Friday. Fleischli scored the team's first six points and had 11 by halftime for a 24-21 advantage.

Jake Hamilton, Sacred Heart-Griffin, boys basketball

The senior guard shot 8 of 11 from the field and finished with a team-high 17 points and five rebounds in a 69-33 rout over Lanphier to win the outright City tournament title for a second straight season. He also had two assists, one block and one steal.

Emma Sneddon, Nokomis, girls basketball

The senior guard delivered eight of her team-best 15 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 43-38 victory over host Carrollton in the Lady Hawk Invitational quarterfinals on Monday. Sneddon rallied NHS from a lethargic third quarter. NHS led 25-16 at halftime before getting outscored 20-4 in the third for a 36-29 deficit. Sneddon scored three field goals and Hailey Engelman delivered a 3 in the final stanza.

Devon Peebles, Pana, boys basketball

The senior guard assembled 30 points and surpassed 1,000 career points along the way in a 55-50 South Central Conference win over North Mac on Friday. Pana led just 46-44 by the end of the third quarter but Peebles helped cement the win with six points in the final stanza. He racked up four 3s and went 8 of 11 from the free throw line.

Emma Scheffler, Springfield High, girls basketball

The junior guard drained four 3s in the fourth quarter and rallied Springfield High to a thrilling 53-52 victory over Southeast in the City tournament at the Bank of Springfield Center on Saturday. Scheffler hit three straight treys for a 51-47 advantage in the fourth quarter. She shot 7 of 12 from 3-point range and led the Senators with 26 points. She totaled 13 points the past two games combined.

Cory West, Sacred Heart-Griffin, wrestling

SHG senior wrestler went 3-0 with three pins to win the 195-pound weight class at the Rich Lovellette Invitational on Saturday in Litchfield. None of West's matches went to a second period and he improved to 32-1.
