Shillington man sentenced to state prison for strangling his mother

Mar. 2—A Shillington man convicted in Berks County Court of strangling his mother has been sentenced to state prison.

Ezra Weitzel, 35, was sentenced Wednesday to seven years and four months to 17 years by Judge Eleni Dimitriou Geishauser.

A jury in January convicted him of strangulation, simple assault and making terroristic threats.

The assault occurred Oct. 19, 2021, and Weitzel was arrested that day. He has been in the county prison since his arrest and will get credit for 500 days of time served.

Police and court documents gave this account:

On the morning of the incident, the victim went to the Shillington police station to report a domestic incident involving her son.

She told officers that Weitzel had assaulted her about 10 minutes earlier in their home in the first block of Second Street.

She said she and Weitzel had a verbal disagreement that led to the him getting upset and throwing things around the house. At one point, he put both his hands around her neck, telling her that he was going to kill her.

With his hands still around her neck, he pushed her over the couch.

She showed police the red discoloration on her neck.

Police went to the home and arrested Weitzel.
