‘It was a shock.’ NC woman wins big on $1 lottery ticket by playing grandkids’ ages

A woman hit a Carolina Cash 5 jackpot using the same numbers she plays every day: the ages of her grandchildren, N.C. lottery officials said this week.

Glenda Honeycutt scored the $265,152 prize on a $1 ticket she bought at the Food Lion on West Roosevelt Boulevard in Monroe, officials said.

“I always play my grandchildren’s ages,” the Monroe resident said when she claimed her jackpot at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Thursday, according to a lottery news release. “I play them every night.”

Her ticket matched the five numbers in the Jan. 14 drawing, beating odds of 1 in 962,598, according to the lottery.

The winning numbers were 13, 20, 27, 29 and 32, according to the Cash 5 game page on NC Lottery.com.

“Three previous times, I matched four of the five balls on Cash 5,” she said.

Honeycutt was eating breakfast when she checked the numbers the morning after the drawing.

“It took a while for it to sink in,” she said. “It was a shock.”

After taxes, Honeycutt took home $189,584, officials said. She plans to spend the money on home repairs.

Friday night’s drawing has an estimated $606,000 jackpot.

Players can buy tickets in Cash 5 and five other lottery games at retailers and Online Play on NC Lottery.com and the lottery app.
