Shockers go on road to knock off UAB behind 29 from Rogers

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita State University Shockers, bolstered by 29 points from Colby Rogers, held on for a road victory at Alabama-Birmingham on Wednesday night, 74-66.

Harlond Beverly and Xavier Bell both scored 12 points to join Rogers in double figures. Rogers was the leading scorer for both teams in the game.

The game started out fairly tight, with neither team growing a substantial lead in the first half. UAB jumped out to an early seven-point lead — which would end up being UAB’s largest of the game — but the Shockers erased it and took a six-point lead into the break.

The Shockers came out in the second half and scored five straight and would later go on to grow their lead to 19 points, but the Blazers would continue to chip into that lead until it dwindled to just one with 3:17 left in the game.

Late-game turnovers have been a problem for Wichita State this season, but the Shockers took care of the ball in the final few minutes and took home the win.

As a team, WSU shot 50% from the field and a blistering 53.3% from beyond the arc while holding the Blazers to 40.4% and 31.3%, respectively.

The Shockers did commit 18 turnovers while forcing 13 on UAB. The Blazers scored 18 points off those turnovers, while the Shockers scored 19. The Shockers had a nine-rebound advantage, 38-31.

The win moves the Shockers to 12-17 on the season and 4-12 in AAC play. Up next is a trip home where the Shockers will host the Rice Owls (11-17, 5-10 AAC) on Sunday. That game will tip off at 6 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
