Shoemakersville man killed in Richmond Township crash
May 25—A Shoemakersville man was killed Thursday when the car he was driving collided with a trash truck.
Daniel Martel, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 5:55 a.m. at the intersection of Fleetwood Lyons and School roads in Richmond Township.
The Fleetwood Police Department gave this account:
Martel was attempting to turn left onto Fleetwood Lyons Road from School Road and entered the intersection into the path of a trash truck driven by Alexander Long, 37, of Fleetwood.
Long, who was traveling westbound on Fleetwood Lyons Road attempted to avoid impact, but was unable to do so.
His vehicle struck that of Martel on the driver's side before flipping onto its side.
Police arrived on the scene to find the trash truck overturned and on fire and heavy damage to the other vehicle.
The Berks County coroner's office confirmed that Martel died as a result of the accident.
Fleetwood Lyons Road was closed for approximately five hours as police investigated and crew cleared the scene.
The borough police were assisted by the Walnuttown and Fleetwood fire companies, and local fire police.
The Exeter Township Police Department also assisted with the investigation.
