Shooting in Canton's southeast section results in guilty pleas, prison sentences

CANTON ‒ Two men have been sent to prison after gunshots were fired at a woman in the city's southeast section.

Police complaints against Davon A. Brunner, 34, and Justin T. Johnson, 33, said bullets hit the woman's car and an occupied home in the 1100 block of Pulley Place SE. The car was disabled by the shots as the victim was northbound on Robin Court SE at Stella Circle.

Attempted murder charges against both Canton men were dropped as part of the resolution of a case arising from the incident reported at 1:34 a.m. on Aug. 14, 2022.

Davon A. Brunner, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of felonious assault and a related specification that a gun was used in the crime. Stark County Common Pleas Judge Natalie R. Haupt sentenced him to five to six years in prison after he entered a guilty plea Aug. 16.

Haupt sentenced Justin T. Johnson, 33, to two to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to felonious assault on May 30.

In April, a jury found Johnson not guilty of improperly firing a firearm at or into a habitation. Jurors deadlocked on charges of felonious assault and attempted murder.

The police complaint filed in Canton Municipal Court alleged that Johnson assisted Brunner, who shot at the victim.

Brunner had been scheduled to go to trial Sept. 25.

When Brunner and Johnson entered their guilty pleas, the Stark County Prosecutor's Office dropped the remaining charges and specifications. The Stark County Grand Jury had indicted both men on identical charges in November.
