Three people are hospitalized after a shooting at an apartment complex in northeast Charlotte on Monday afternoon, officials said.

Asante Sharif Turner, 22, has been charged for his involvement in the shooting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Tuesday.

At 2:27 p.m., officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call in the 1700 block of Willow Haven Lane, near Interstate 485. When the officers arrived, they found three people who had been struck by gunfire, CMPD said.

Police said a gunman opened fire after confronting the three victims outside an apartment, according to WSOC. One person was hit multiple times, including in the neck, the Charlotte TV station reported.

Two victims were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Medic, the Mecklenburg EMS, said. The other individual was taken to another hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.

Shortly after the shooting, a trooper with North Carolina State Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction near Interstate 85 and U.S. 29, police said. The driver was found to be a suspect in the shooting and later identified as Turner, CMPD said in a news released Tuesday.

Turner is in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office’s custody and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, shooting in the city limits and injury to personal property, police said.
