Shooting in Colonial Heights prompts lockdown of city school

COLONIAL HEIGHTS – A city elementary school had to go on lockdown and residents asked to stay inside Thursday after shots were fired in a neighborhood and witnesses said at least one of the shooters was seen running away.

No shooter was found, and no one was injured, but several cars and at least one apartment were struck by gunfire, police said.

The incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. Thursday on Lakeview Park Road at Cabell Drive in front of the Terrace View Apartments. Investigators found multiple rounds in the intersection and damage to the cars and an apartment, but no injuries.

While on the scene, witnesses told police they saw at least one individual running away from the scene who appeared to be armed.

“Based on this information, Lakeview Elementary was placed on modified lockdown and residents in the area were asked to shelter in place,” police said in an email to The Progress-Index. “This was done for a brief period of time to ensure the safety of the children, school staff and the residents in the area.”

Using tracking dogs brought in from Chesterfield County, police combed the area between the school and the scene of the shooting for several hours. There were no signs of the suspects or any other victims, and “the area was deemed safe for residents to continue their normal activities,” the email said.
