Suspect in Dallas shooting who killed 4 died by suicide, police say

The suspect in a Dallas shooting that killed four people, including a toddler, died by suicide after a police chase, authorities said.

Byron Carillo, 21, opened fire at a home in southeast Dallas on Sunday afternoon, according to the Dallas Police Department. When officers arrived sometime around 4 p.m., they found five people shot. Three adults died at the scene; two children – a 15-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy – were taken to a nearby hospital.

The toddler died within hours; the teen was listed in stable condition late Sunday, police said. The adults were later identified as Jose Lopez, 50; Karina Lopez, 33; and Vanessa De La Cruz, 20.

After the shooting, Carillo immediately fled the scene, stole a vehicle heading south and led authorities on a high speed chase, police said. He eventually crashed the stolen vehicle into a ditch and started running. When officers got close, he took his own life.

The Texas Ranger Division is investigating the "death in custody," according to a statement from the Dallas Police Department.

Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting. On Sunday, police published a statement saying they believe the incident to be "isolated" but did not elaborate.

In 2021, Carillo was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault and was forced to wear an ankle monitor. Before the shooting on Sunday, he cut the monitor off, police said.

There have been at least 39,800 deaths related to gun violence so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks gun violence statistics using public sources. Of those deaths, 1,569 were children and teenagers.
