Shooting death of Athens man in his home remains a mystery

Athens-Clarke police detectives are continuing to search for a motive and a suspect in the weekend death of an Athens man who was slain apparently while preparing his breakfast at home.

Police said Eugene Scott, 72, was reported dead shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday in his home along Old Monroe Road, a neighborhood in west Athens off U.S. Highway 78.

A friend came by to pick up Scott and take him to get groceries and found him dead of a gunshot wound to the head, police Lt. Jody Thompson said Monday.

Scott was killed in his kitchen while he was making breakfast, according to Thompson.

Scott, is not from Athens but has been living here about a year, although he does have family in the area, according to Thompson.

“There is no apparent motive and nothing stolen that we know of,” he said.
