Shooting death at Mobile apartment considered self-defense, man arrested in alleged burglary

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with yesterday’s alleged burglary at a local apartment complex, which coincided with a shooting death that police now say was a case of self-defense.

The shooting, which happened around 1:21 p.m. on April 16 at Ashford Place Apartments, resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man, according to the police department.

LOCATION:

Police originally responded to the apartments after receiving reports of a burglary in progress.

Investigations indicate that the deceased male and another man, identified as 22-year-old Okoye Jabrayll Day, were part of a group attempting to break into an apartment.

Day was arrested and charged with burglary, and certain persons forbidden from possessing a firearm. The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review and additional charges.

The name of the dead man will be released after notification of next of kin, according to an MPD news release.

Mobile PD says no further information will be released at this time.
