Shooting at downtown Petersburg loft apartments leaves one dead, two injured

PETERSBURG — One person was killed and at least one other injured in a shooting Saturday in a parking lot at the ArtistSpace Lofts in downtown Petersburg, according to police reports.

The surviving victims were taken to an area hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

The fatality, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Petersburg Police requested mutual aid from the Virginia State Police and Dinwiddie Sheriff's Office. According to reports, Chesterfield Police also was called to assist with crowd control.

On Facebook, one poster who lives nearby reported the shooting "sounded like a machine gun ... literally."

The shooting death is Petersburg’s 11th homicide of 2022, three more than at this same time last year.
