Shooting in Poughkeepsie injures man in ambush after argument in Main Street business

City of Poughkeepsie police are looking for a man who shot a Poughkeepsie resident in an ambush outside a deli on Tuesday evening in the city's latest episode of gunfire.

The shooting took place around 6:30 p.m. outside Lana Main Stop Deli & Grocery at 551 Main St.

Police said the two men were customers who had an argument inside the store. The shooter left the business and the area, but returned shortly afterward and waited outside for the victim, they said.

The victim, 30, walked outside and a gunman shot him several times in the abdomen before fleeing north on North White Street, police said. The victim was taken to MidHudson Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police said the victim would not cooperate with their investigation. The shooter was wearing a blue camouflage head/face mask, dark-colored jacket, yellow hooded sweatshirt and tan boots, police said.

Though police said Tuesday's episode appears to be limited to a dispute between those two men, the city has been plagued by violence this year, whether by gang activity or individual crimes.

Earlier in November Poughkeepsie High School was closed for several days after a shooting outside the school on Forbus Street. A 13-year-old was found with a gun and arrested following the incident.

Anyone with information on Tuesday's shooting or other violent crimes is asked to call police at 845-451-7577.
