1 person wounded in shooting at North Carolina community college

One person was wounded in a shooting on a North Carolina community college campus Thursday morning.

Forsyth Tech in Winston-Salem went into a campus-wide lockdown after shots were fired around 10 a.m. The university described things as “an active shooter situation,” sending students into a panic.

Cops initially said they were searching for two shooters. However, at an afternoon news conference they said no suspects remained at large, the Charlotte Observer reported. Investigators did not go into further detail.

About 90 minutes after the initial shooting call came in, Winston-Salem police said there was “no active shooter on the campus of Forsyth Tech.”

“There is still an active investigation on the campus,” police said. “There are no other threats to any other schools in the area.”

Forsyth Tech eventually released all students and canceled classes for the rest of the week.

“We know that there’s the possibility for something like this happening every day, and so our thoughts go out to the students and faculty and administration there at Forsyth Tech,” Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines told local Fox affiliate WGHP. “It’s a very difficult time across the country as we see these things happen and particularly comes right into your own backyard.”

Forsyth Tech has around 11,000 undergraduate students and also has connections with nearby high schools. Some high school students were on campus during the lockdown, according to WGHP.

This is a developing news story.
