Shooting in York County prompts lockout at 2 Fort Mill schools, officials say

Two Fort Mill schools were placed on lockout Thursday morning after a shooting within a mile of both campuses, officials said.

Both Fort Mill Middle School and Fort Mill Elementary School, located off Springfield Parkway,

placed on lockout around 10 a.m. after law enforcement advised school officials about the incident, said Joe Burke, spokesman for the Fort Mill school district. Doors were locked and instruction continued at both schools, Burke said.

The lockout was lifted less than an hour later, school officials said in a statement to parents.

The incident area was outside the town limits of Fort Mill, north of Rock Hill, officials said. .

Deputies went to the area of Hensley Road and Sleepy Hollow Road after a man was shot, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies posted on social media around 10:15 a.m. that there was increased police activity in the area after the shooting.

A person of interest has been taken into custody and the shooting victim was taken to a hospital, according to posts from the Sheriff’s Office on social media.

Deputies are continuing the investigation but there is no public safety threat in the area, Faris told The Herald around 11 a.m.
