JONESVILLE — The Hillsdale County Shop with a Hero event has grown since law enforcement started engaging with Shop with a Cop in 2012.

This year, the program was able to expand to 80 kids from 50 as in years past.

On Sunday, Dec. 4, area youth chosen by their schools arrived at Walmart in Jonesville around 5 p.m. where they were partnered with a police officer, firefighter or paramedic to browse through the store, selecting something they needed before turning to items they wanted.

“This is such an amazing event that is held for our kids and we are so glad we were able to partner with Walmart to help more kids participate,” said Christie Campbell, executive director for Child Abuse Prevent and Awareness. “We look forward to future Shop with a Hero events.”

Donations by Walmart, CAPA and local attorney Kimm Burger made the event possible, Campbell said.

Somerset Township Police Chief Keith Bancroft helped to organize this year’s event with participating emergency personnel from every police agency in Hillsdale County, eight area fire departments, Hillsdale County 911, Reading Emergency Unit and Hillsdale Hospital.

“Jonesville Walmart is proud to be part of the Shop with a Hero event where we can help make Christmas a little brighter for kids in our community,” Jonesville Walmart Store Manager Gale Fix said. “We’re grateful for all who come together to make the event happen each year.”
