The Met Gala is the hottest ticket in New York, and it's no wonder that the event is referred to as the "Oscar's of fashion." The Met Gala red carpet is known for bringing together the industry's top designers and celebrities for a night of fashion, style and excess. This year, the fundraising event celebrates the work of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, and guests were instructed to follow a dress code that would "honor Karl." The stars turned up and showed out in everything from understated elegance to a full-fledged cat costume to celebrate the work of one of the most iconic designers of the 20th and 21st century.

Nude effect dresses worn by Michaela Coel and Amanda Seyfried

One of the most daring trends of the night included nude-effect gowns that took advantage of carefully placed embroidery to add a touch of glamour and elegance to an otherwise skin-baring style. Actress (and event co-chair) Michaela Coel was glowing in a glittering Schiaparelli gown, while Suki Waterhouse opted for an airy nude gown with floral embroidery. Amanda Seyfried opted for a nearly-naked look with a mini Oscar de la Renta dress that was dripping with beaded chains that concealed a skin-toned corset.

Add a barely-there look to your own wardrobe with the lace maxi dress with bodysuit by & Other Stories. The gown makes use of a nude bodysuit with a delicate, floral chiffon overlay. For something a little more sultry, opt for the Heidi sequin long-sleeve dress from Retrofete or the Follie Gown by Michael Costello. Both gowns use see-through black chiffon that'll add a touch of elegance to your nude-effect gown.

Corset dresses worn by Jessica Chastain and Margot Robbie

The return of the corset has been praised by many—and criticized by someand the trend reigned supreme on the Met Gala red carpet this year. Emily Ratajkowski wore a Tory Burch gown whose bodice was made to reflect the iconic quilted pattern of a Chanel purse. Jessica Chastain stunned in a Gucci gown that gave Glam Goth, along with a radical new platinum blonde look. Not to be outdone, Margot Robbie wore a reproduction of a 1993 Haute Couture Chanel gown that featured a boned corset with clear panels.

The Pintuck corset sweetheart maxi dress from Asos Design is an easy-to-wear take on the trend, offered in a vibrant cherry red shade that we saw on the Met Gala carpet on stars like Gabrielle Union and Kylie Jenner. The Corset Tiered Gown from Fame & Partners features a sweet corset, made with translucent chiffon layers to add lightness to the twist-on-a-classic style. Finally, the Bustier Gown from For Love & Lemons is a punk version of the trend with layers of light fabric and lace, combined with a thigh-high slit.

Pretty in pink—seen on Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss

Soft shades of pink featured heavily on models Naomi Campbell, Ashley Graham, and mother-daughter-duo, Kate and Lila Moss.

If you were afraid that the Barbiecore trend had come and gone, you're in luck. Some of fashion's top players opted for rose-hued gowns that looked nothing like the styles we saw earlier during award's season. Naomi Campbell wore a pink Chanel Haute Couture gown from 2010 that resembled a traditional Indian sari. Fellow supermodel Kate Moss opted for a blush-toned Fendi gown, while her daughter Lila stunned in a feathered pink gown herself. Model Ashley Graham dialed up the old-Hollywood glamour with a Harris Reed gown that was designed in honor of a Karl Lagerfeld gown from 1983.

For your own take on la vie en rose, start with the classic design of the L'idée Sirene Off-Shoulder Puff-Sleeve Pleated Midi Column Dress, which uses gorgeous puff sleeves to add volume and visual interest. For a look that'll celebrate the sari-style of Campbell's vintage Chanel gown, opt for the Pink Viscose Crepe Embroidered Saree Gown from Vivek Patel. The dress features the same pleated length of pink satin along the shoulder to add a touch of elegance. Finally, the Look Into The Sun Gown from Free People is an easier, everyday take on a dusty pink that'll look right at home at any special event.

Classic black and white seen on Julia Garner and Gisele Bündchen

Black and white were the color combo du jour on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet.
Black and white were the color combo du jour on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet.

When the Met first announced that the theme of this year's Costume Institute exhibition would celebrate the work of Karl Lagerfeld, fashion girlies around the country knew that it would mean one thing: An abundance of black and white on the red carpet. The classic colors were a Chanel mainstay, and Lagerfeld used them with reckless abandon throughout his nearly 40-year tenure at the helm of the legendary fashion label. Classic black and white was seen on stars like Julia Garner, who wore a white gown with a stunning black velvet cape from Gucci. Meanwhile, Emily Blunt wore a twist on a classic with her Michael Kors gown.

One of the evening's most memorable style moments, however, came from singer/actress Janelle Monae, who arrived in a Thom Browne creation that was removed on the steps of the met to reveal a body-baring confection that stole the show.

To ramp up the glamour at your next event, look no further than the Grace Maxi Dress with Cape, which features a maxi gown with a deep V-neckline, leg slit, and a sophisticated full-length cape that adds a dramatic, contemporary feel. For a gown that'd be just at home at the Met Gala, consider the Two Tone Ruffled One Shoulder Gown, which features white petals combined with a black skirt for a timeless and enduring style. Finally, for a sweeter take on white, reach for the Magically Charming White Sequin Embroidered Lace-Up Maxi Dress, which is just as beautiful at a formal event as it would be to a dressed up dinner.

Tributes to Karl, worn by Doja Cat and Penelope Cruz

For fashion's biggest fans, the Met Gala this year would have been nothing without tributes to some of Karl Lagerfeld's most iconic designs and to Lagerfeld himself. Gala co-chair Penelope Cruz wore a reproduction of a Chanel Haute Couture design from spring 1988, while actress Olivia Wilde wore a reproduction of a 1983 dress that Lagerfeld designed for Chloé. The original Chloé gown is on view within the exhibition itself, and features the same guitar embroidery throughout.

Finally, superstar musician Doja Cat wore a slinky Oscar de la Renta creation, though her look caught the eyes of spectators because of her prosthetic cat nose and dramatic feline makeupa tribute to Lagerfeld's famous pet cat, Choupette. Actor Jared Leto, a Met Gala fixture, also opted to pay homage to Choupette, arriving to the red carpet in a full-fledged cat suit before changing into something more stylish.

The Dripped jewel embellished midi dress from Asos Design is nothing if not classic Lagerfeld. The dress is encrusted with rhinestones, giving the classic silhouette a glamorous, glittering upgrade. For something that better reflects Lagerfeld's designs for Chanel, reach for the Sloan Sleeveless Midi Column Popcorn Dress, which will work for dressed-up affairs as well as work events and brunch with friends. Finally, if you really want to lean into a Choupette tribute, don't forget to order the Black Cat Adult Zipster. The onesie pajamas aren't very glamorous, but they'll certainly make a style statement.
