Small enough to sit on a desktop, yet powerful enough to rid your home of 99.97% of air particles, according to the company, the HP01 is the kind of air purifier that offers plenty more than meets the eye: In addition to clearing the air, it can heat or cool your room, depending on your needs.
Unlike the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool HP04 ($649 at Best Buy), which wasn't fully able to mask the smell of cigarette smoke and lemon essential oil in our roundup of the best air purifiers, customers say the pared-down HP01 does a great job. "[Works] good in CA [with] fire smoke, barely smell in [the] room," wrote one reviewer.
Another noted: "I have a 'mom cave" off my garage. It was getting the smokers' smell, so I bought this to see if it would clean the air a bit. It does great! Not only does it clean the air, it heats the room too."
What's more, in testing, we noted that the HP04 may not have fared as well as some of the others with smoke because of the time limits we placed the machine in the lab—our observation period was only four hours. We had a great experience with the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Cryptomic HP06 ($749.99), however, which did a stellar job removing formaldehyde—a probable human carcinogen—that can be found in cigarette smoke and other items.
Compared to the HP04 and HP06, the HP01 doesn't offer as many bells and whistles, but that's also part of its charm. It's also more affordable than virtually any other Dyson air purifier—even when it's not on sale. And while you won't get the punched-up functionality of the aforementioned machines, it oscillates to project and circulate purified air across the room and delivers up to 400 square feet of coverage. Best Buy shoppers say the HP01 is also easy to setup, convenient to use and perfect if a lightweight option that you can transport from room to room.
