Shoppers line up for hours at new Johnson County Nordstrom Rack, looking for deals
Clothing retailer Nordstrom Rack opened its second Johnson County location Thursday at 12050 Metcalf Ave., in Overland Park, attracting lines of eager shoppers.
As lines formed outside the store’s door around 6:45 a.m. for the 9 a.m. opening, customers entered raffles, danced along to a DJ, and ordered lattes from the Wild Way Coffee camper.
The store gave away a $1,000 gift card in celebration of the opening, a store manager told The Star. Customers who registered for Nordstrom Rack credit cards were instructed to spin a prize wheel.
That afternoon, lines to the register stretched to the back of the 27,000-square foot store. Nordstrom Rack offers discounts of up to 70% on apparel brands such as Madewell and Calvin Klein, plus accessories, beauty, home and shoes, all sold at lower prices than those at its sister brand, Nordstrom. Nordstrom has remained at Overland Park’s Oak Park Mall after deciding against a move to the Country Club Plaza.
The other area Nordstrom Rack is near Oak Park in Lenexa at 9540 Quivira Road.
For its new location, the retailer took over the old U.S. Toy Co. space, which closed last year to concentrate on online sales.
Part of Legacy Development-owned Overland Crossing, Nordstrom Rack joins Five Below, Burlington and Golf Galaxy.
Soon, Whole Foods will join the roster. Dave Claflin, vice president of development for Legacy Development, told The Star Whole Foods is targeting a Nov. 15 opening date.
Nordstrom Rack will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
