Shopping Malls, Hair Salons, Barber Shops Open In Walnut Creek

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Following new guidance announced last Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom, hair salons and barber shops were allowed to reopen in Walnut Creek and throughout Contra Costa County Monday for indoor services.

Also allowed to reopen on Monday: indoor shopping malls. The malls are required to restrict customers to 25-percent of maximum capacity.

The changes are a huge step forward for businesses struggling to survive coronavirus shelter-in-place restrictions that have been in place since March.

But not all businesses were given the go-ahead to reopen. Indoor dining and bars are a big loser, as they remain closed. Movie theaters, museums, and entertainment facilities such as the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek are still off-limits.

Children's playgrounds are still closed, and the process to reopen in-class instruction has not changed.

Meanwhile, on Monday another 120 people were confirmed to have the virus, bringing the total number of cases to 13,938 in Contra Costa County.

There's a bright spot in the county statistics — for the third time in the past seven days, no new coronavirus deaths were reported. The number of deaths held steady at 175.

Here's where the deaths have happened, including a breakdown of those that occurred in long term care facilities —
