Southern drops NJSIAA Group 4 Final to Bridgewater-Raritan

WEST LONG BRANCH – As one of the most successful boys lacrosse programs in Shore Conference history, Southern Regional was seeking an exclamation point to add to the team’s rich history.

The Rams have 10 Class A South division championships, they’ve earned one Shore Conference Tournament title and they’ve amassed four NJSIAA South Group 4 trophies.

But their elusive goal of winning an NJSIAA Group 4 State Title was denied by a tough Bridgewater-Raritan program, which was facing a two-goal deficit late in the third quarter at Robert E. Feeney field at Shore Regional High School.

However, the Panthers rallied and scored four unanswered goals for an 8-6 win over the Rams to snag the Group 4 trophy for bus ride home.

A tough ending for Southern

“We had a couple bad clears in the last five minutes, which really hurt us. That little minute and a half stretch to close the third quarter, up by two goals with a lot of momentum and we let them get two goals in that last minute and a half to get the momentum back,” Southern Regional coach John Pampalone said. “And we started the fourth quarter with a really long possession. And we had some good shots. We couldn’t find the back of the net. And they are a high-powered team and you knew they were going to find the back of the net eventually. We couldn’t match them in the fourth quarter.”

Southern senior attack Jack Kolbe (two goals) and senior attack Ryan Sininsky (three goals, one assist) had accounted for the first three goals of the third quarter. Kolbe registered a successful shot with 8:39 left, which tied the game at 4-4. Sininsky followed with consecutive goals with 5:07 left and with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter.

A rally that led to a championship

But Bridgewater-Raritan started a furious rally, which resulted in a game-breaking, four-goal run.

Panthers junior midfielder Colin Kurdyla (two goals, three assists) started the rally with his goal with 48 seconds left and then junior attack Tommy Tremarco (two goals) got into the action with a goal with 9.8 seconds left. The Panthers had neutralized Southern’s momentum in less than a minute of play.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. Obviously this was a very tough loss for us,” Pampalone said. “Getting this close, I feel like I’ve been saying this for the fourth time, and it is kind of getting hard, we continue to close the gap and get closer and closer and hopefully one of these years we can knock the door down and finally win this thing. But I couldn’t be prouder of the fight and the commitment of these guys this year.”

Senior leadership elevated Southern again

Southern’s senior class brought the program back into the postseason headlines with a 46-13 record over the last four years and with back-to-back NJSIAA South Group 4 titles.

“It is a shame that their (the seniors) careers were cut short by a year. They really brought us back. We were on top and we didn’t fall that far off,” Pampalone said. “We missed a lot of title games…and they really brought us back to playing big games again and to big moments and getting us back to championship (games). I couldn’t say more about them. They will certainly be missed.”

Sectional Final

South Group 4 

(1) Southern 7, (3) Lenape 4

The top-seeded Rams (16-3) won their second straight sectional title after emerging from a 2-2 halftime tie with the No. 3 seed Indians (9-9). It is also Southern's fourth sectional title in school history with previous sectional titles coming in 2013, 2014 and 2021. Zach Washco (two goals) scored one in each half and he put Southern up 1-0, Ryan Sininsky also scored a goal in the first half and finished with that goal and two assists. Jack Kolbe led the team in scoring with two goals and two assists and Tyler Sininsky had 10 saves.

Non-Public B

(2) Rutgers Prep 16, (6) Red Bank Catholic 9

Torin Harmon (three goals, two assists) guided the No. 6 seed Caseys (13-9) in scoring despite a setback against the Argonauts (11-6). Also, Red Bank Catholic's Jackson Lu had two goals and two assists and Nate Waldron, Sam Fertal, Peter Villare and Ryan Brown each supplied a goal. Teammate Christian Schrader made nine saves.

Friday, May 27

Sectional Final

South Group 2

(1) Rumson-Fair Haven 17, (2) Manasquan 6

The top-seeded Bulldogs (20-4) hoisted the South Group 2 trophy for the second consecutive season as Christian Bockelmann erupted for a game-high seven points (three goals, four assists) and as Tommy French added six points (three goals, three assists). Also, Cole Cashion added two goals and two assists and Quinn Stankovits had three goals. Continually with the explosion on offense was Andy Croddick, Connor Spagnuola and Philip Passalaqua, who each generated two goals. Additionally, Will Setteducate had eight saves. The No. 2 seed Warriors (16-5) were led by Max Pauwels (two goals), Robert Pendergist (one goal), Brandon Kunz (one goal) and Brody Muly (one goal).

Sophomore attack Ryan Martin, junior attack Brendan Donnelly, junior attack Nick Blalock and freshman midfielder Davis Campbell each recorded a goal for the No. 9 seed Colts (12-9) and sophomore goalie Brandon Desena finished with two saves against the top-seeded Ironmen (14-1).

Nick Cosimano corralled 13 ground balls, Connor Harms had six ground balls and Torin Harmon had five points (two goals, three assists) as the No. 6 seed Caseys (12-9) toppled the No. 3 seed Spartans (12-4). Teammates Jackson Lu (three goals, one assist), Peter Villare (two goals, one assist) and Ryan Brown (two goals) were also a big part of the offense. Sam Fertal added one assist and Christian Schrader stopped 18 shots.

Saturday, May 21

Non-Public A

The Colts withstood a six-goal, fourth-quarter rally from the Crusaders to win the game. CBA led 2-0 after the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 7-3 after three quarters. CBA's Brandon DeSena produced 13 saves while Nick Blalock (four goals, two assists), Ryan Martin (three goals, one assist) and Brendan Donnelly (one goal, one assist) guided the offense.

Shore was led by Jamie Mazzacco 3 goals, Ben Levy 2 goals, Sam Madalone 1 goal 2 assists, Carson Cooke 1 goals 1 assist, Andrew Decker 1 goal and Carson Spallone 2 assists, Aidan Murphy 1 assist.  Tucker Malfa was 5 of 10 on Faceoffs and shores Defense of Jackson Whitacre, Luke and Max White, Mike Pillari, Jacob Herschenfeld, Aidan O'Brien and Goalie Walker Hunter (15 saves) held Delaware Valley Scoreless in the second half.  Delaware Valley was led by Jack Bills 2 goals, Will Fritsche 1 goal and goalie Nick Contino had 17 saves in the loss.

South Group 2

(3) Wall 15, (6) Holmdel 6

John McCurry erupted for eight points (seven goals, one assist) as the Crimson Knights toppled the Hornets (13-7). Also, Matt Dollive had two goals and two assists while Connor Moore had two goals and one assist and Shea Brennan had two goals. Wall's Aiden Kessler made nine saves.

South Group 4

(5) Howell 8, (4) Cherokee 7

Colin Fay stopped 10 shots for the Rebels (14-6) while Tyler Burns (one goal, two assists), Doug MacKenzie (two goals), Nate Lorenzo (two goals) and Vincent Burns (one goal, one assist) were the leading scorers for Howell.

(1) Southern 13, (8) Old Bridge 2

The Rams (14-3) cruised to victory over the Knights (9-10) as Ryan Sininsky led the team with seven points (three goals, four assists) and Jack Kolbe (three goals, one assist) and Jake Washco (two goals, two assists) each added four points. Southern's Tyler Sininsky had eight saves while Nick Roesch had three saves.
