Manasquan girls lacrosse falls to Summit in Group 2 State Final

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Manasquan girls lacrosse team’s first experience in the NJSIAA Group 2 State Final was a “frustrating” experience, according to coach Maria Eldridge.

Manasquan fell behind early and had trouble winning the draw throughout the game and that compounded its task of playing Summit, which has one of the best offenses in the state.

Summit built up a six-goal lead at halftime and the Hilltoppers carried that momentum over to the second half and eventually won, 14-6, over Manasquan at Warren Hills Regional High School.

“Physically and mentally our defense can hang against the best in the state,” Eldridge said. “And I just think that, we just lost too many possessions that we couldn’t get back. And if we can’t get the draws, it is just frustrating.”

Manasquan (14-6) sophomore attack Talia Blum led the team in scoring with four goals while senior midfielder Ava Chiarella and senior attack Phoebe Matuch each added one goal and one assist and junior attack Ali Evans and sophomore midfielder Bianca Chiarella each had one assist.

But all eyes were on Manasquan senior goalie Quinn McCarthy, who turned in another gem in net, by making 11 saves against the Hilltoppers (21-2).

“She’s phenomenal and I haven’t seen another goalie out there that is really that much of an impact player,” Eldridge said. “When she makes those saves. Wow. She’s an extra defender and a goalie combined in one. She’s just a stud. We’re going to miss her tremendously.”
