THURSDAY

HOWELL TRI

Howell 66, Manalapan 3

Howell 52, St, Thomas Aquinas 18

It was a milestone night for the Howell High School wrestling program.

Howell's 66-3, 52-18 wins over Manalapan and St. Thomas Aquinas enabled the program to reach the 800-win mark.

In its 58th season, the program, which was originally Southern Freehold, has a record of 800-256-4.

John Gagliano, who is in his 25th season as Howell's head coach, has been involved in a lot of the success of the program both coaching and wrestling-wise.

Howell has gone 507-79 under Gagliano, the Shore's all-time winningest wrestling coach. Gagliano was also a region champion in 1986 and a district champion in 1987 when the program was coached by Doug Bower

During Gagliano's coaching tenure, Howell won NJSIAA Group 5 championships in 2017 and 2018, NJSIAA sectional championships in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, Shore Conference Tournament championships in 2014, 2016 and 2019, 18 Shore Conference divisional titles, including 15 straight from 2006-2020, seven NJSIAA district team championships.

The group, sectional and SCT titles during Gagliano's tenure are the only ones the program has won.

Three of Howell's four state champions - Joey Langel (2008), Eric Keosseian (2017) and Hunter Mays (2021) have come under Gagliano. Howell's other state champion was the great Carlos Fontanez in 1965 when the school was Southern Freehold. Fontanez also won a state title in 1963 and was a state runner-up in 1964 for Freehold.

Overall, Howell has 24 divisional championships and 13 team district titles.

The program has had six head coaches. Other coaches who had great success at Howell were Ron Surgent (113-49-2 from 1964-77) and Bower (140-49-2 from 1981-93).
