Southern routs South Plainfield; Raritan coach Rob Nucci collects career win No. 450

1. Southern 61, South Plainfield 6. The Rams (11-0), ranked No. 7 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, steamrolled the defending NJSIAA Central Group 3 champion Tigers.

Southern, which will host powerful Delbarton, ranked No. 1 in the NJWWA Top 20, Wednesday night, won 12 bouts, including 10 straight from 150-120. The Rams also had seven pins, including four straight from heavyweight-120, and did not allow a bonus point in the two bouts they lost.

Matt Henrich (150), the NJSIAA seventh-place finisher at 138 last season, began Southern's 10-bout run with a 5-1 win over Nicholas Campagna, the state eighth-place finisher at 150 last season.

Nick Bennet (157), returning region qualifier Collin French (190), returning state qualifier Anthony Evangelista (heavyweight), freshman Anthony Mason (106), returning region qualifiers Sam Pari (113) and Scottie Sari (120) and returning state qualifier and region champion Wyatt Stout (138) pinned.

South Plainfield's J.J. Giordano, the state seventh-place finisher at 144 last season, defeated returning state qualifier Hayden Hochstrasser 5-2 to begin the match.

Middletown North 35, Hillsborough 29: A 5-3 win in tiebreaker period No. 1 by Lucas Ainbinder over returning state qualifier Matthew Jones in the final bout at 215 pounds clinched the Lions' win over the Raiders.

Middletown North 57, Matawan 15: Matawan's Richard Gomez a 2021 state qualifier, defeated Middletown North's Brady Klinsky, a 2022 state qualifier, 7-4 in the 106-pound bout to hand Klinsky his first defeat of the season, but the Lions defeated the Huskies to sweep the tri.

Gomez's win avenged an 8-5 defeat to Klinsky in last season's District 20 106-pound championship bout.

Middletown North's Matthew Castelli (157) defeated Colin Palumbo 6-3 in a matchup of returning District 20 third-place finishers.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP TRI

Freehold Township 36, Shore 35: A 5-4 decision by Ethan Kaufman at heavyweight in the final bout, capped an 18-point run over the final four bouts and gave the Patriots the win over the Blue Devils.

Peter Gosza (175) and Aidan Harrington (190) began the winning run with pins and Nicholas Benjamino (215) proceeded Kaufman with a 6-3 win.

Ocean 55, Shore 20

(Girls) Ocean 48, Freehold Township 36: A pin by Sophie Sharp in the final bout over Emma MacDonald at 113 pounds gave the Spartans the win over the Patriots.

Sharp was fourth at 114 pounds on Jan. 16 in the Shore Conference Girls Tournament.

It was the second pin in a final bout by a girl that enabled a team to win a match in four days. Lakewood's Marlen Castillo had the match-clinching pin in an open match Jan. 18 against Brick.

The match had the maximum 84 combined points that can be scored in a match. Ocean had six pins and won two by forfeit. Freehold Township had six pins.

Pinelands 41, Barnegat 31: A pin by Jake Greenberg in the final bout at 138 pounds capped a 17-point run over the final three bouts as the Wildcats defeated the Bengals.

Josiah Hart (126) began the winning run with a win by technical fall. Returning state qualifier Mason Livio (132) gave Pinelands a 35-31 lead headed into the final bout with a pin.

Manasquan 41, Barnegat 34: A pin by Michael O'Connor in the final bout at 138 pounds gave Manasquan the win over the Bengals.

Jackson Memorial 55, Donovan Catholic 21: The Jaguars won the final six bouts from 165-106 - five by pin - as they defeated the Griffins.

Donovan Catholic's Sawyer Ostroff (126) pinned Jonathan Espinoza in a matchup of returning state qualifiers. Ostroff was at Howell last season.

Camden Catholic 54, Donovan Catholic 24: The Irish's talented freshman Sammy Spaulding defeated Kurt Wehner, the NJSIAA seventh-place finisher at 106 last season, 13-11 in the final bout at 120 pounds as Camden Catholic defeated the Griffins.

Seton Hall Prep 56, Donovan Catholic 9: The Pirates' Carlo VanVolkenburgh (126) defeated Ostroff 7-4 in a matchup of returning state qualifiers as Seton Hall Prep defeated the Griffins.

Donovan Catholic heavyweight Sam Rock defeated returning state qualifier Jack Tierney 4-2 in sudden victory.

The Rockets won NJSIAA Group 2 championships in 2012 and 2022, NJSIAA Central Group 2 sectional championships in 2004, 2012, 2018 and 2022, 14 Shore Conference divisional titles and six NJSIAA district team championships in Nucci's 22 seasons. Nucci was the head coach at Pinelands for two seasons before he became Raritan's head coach.

4. Raritan 35, Shawnee 30: Robert Mulligan's pin in the final bout at 165 pounds gave the Rockets the win over Shawnee.

It was the second time in three days, A win by Mulligan enabled Raritan to win a match. He had the match-clinching 1-0 win over Delaware Valley's Kevin Roman in the next-to-last bout in Raritan's 34-33 win on criteria Thursday night.

Raritan rallied from a 25-9 deficit with six bouts remaining with a 20-point run from 132-150. The decision by Nucci and his coaching staff to bump away from Shawnee's returning state qualifier Brett Balzan at 126 paid off as returning state qualifier Ryan Mansueto bumped up to 132 and pinned; Unbeaten sophomore Alex Delaurier bumped up to 138 and win by technical fall; Returning state qualifier Zach Reilley bumped up to 144 and pinned and returning state qualifier Braden Kmak bumped up to 150 and defeated returning region fifth-place finisher Chris Ahrens 9-6.

St. Peter's Prep 64, 4. Raritan 18: The Marauders, ranked No. 4 in the NJWWA Top 20, jumped out to a 35-0 lead after six bouts and went on to defeat the Rockets, who are ranked No. 20 in the NJWWA rankings.

Raritan did have three consecutive pins from 126-138 by Mansueto, Delaurier and Reilley. Reilley pinned two-time state qualifier Angelo Pellicci.

1. Southern 42, Phillipsburg 12: Southern showed Thursday night it is without question the team to beat for the NJSIAA Group 5 championship.

The Rams, ranked No. 7 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20, soundly defeated No. 9 and defending Group 5 champion Phillipsburg (9-1). The two are likely to meet again Feb. 12 in the Group 5 championship match at Rutgers University's Jersey Mike's Arena .

Phillipsburg defeated Southern 27-25 last year in the Group 5 semifinal at Southern. Southern leads the series 9-7, which includes six meetings in the NJSIAA Tournament.

Southern (10-0) won 10 of the 14 bouts and did not give up a bonus point in the four they lost.

A six-bout, 25-point run from 132-165 gave Southern a 32-3 lead after nine bouts.

8. Manalapan 55, Marlboro 12: Manalapan head coach Scott Pressman picked up career win No. 350 as Manalapan (17-2, 4-1)) defeated the Mustangs (1-12, 0-5). Pressman has a career record of 350-164. Manalapan won the NJSIAA Central Group 5 championship and advanced to the Group 5 championship match in 2020 and won NJSIAA district team championships in 2017 and 2022 under Pressman. Pressman was the head coach at Freehold before he became Manalapan's head coach

2. Christian Brothers Academy 53, 10. Middletown South 20: Freshmen Robert Duffy (113), freshman Brendan Boyer (138), returning state third-place finisher Zander Silva (157), returning state qualifier Nick Stump (175) and returning region qualifier Peter Grippo (190) all pinned as the Colts (6-7, 5-0) took another major step toward the divisional title with the win over the Eagles (5-4, 2-3).

CBA, which already defeated Manalapan, Middletown North and Howell, has divisional matches remaining with Freehold Township on Jan. 25 and Marlboro on Feb. 1.

Freshman Jimmy Jakub (144) defeated returning region qualifier Alec Holland 3-1

Middletown South's returning region champion and three-time state qualifier David Hussey (165) defeated returning state qualifier Anthony Lawrence 3-1 in sudden victory.

Howell 38, 9. Middletown North 37: A win by technical fall by two-time state qualifier Giovanni Scafidi (132) in the next-to-last bout gave Howell the lead for good at 38-34 and then J.J. Machnik (138) held returning state qualifier Justin Fearon to an 8-2 decision in the last bout as Howell (9-5, 3-2) defeated the Lions (11-4, 3-3).

Scafidi's win concluded a three-bout 16-point run that enabled Howell to wipe out a 34-22 deficit.

Returning state qualifier Xavier Ortega (120) began the run with a pin. Two-time state qualifier and 2021 state 113-pound fifth-place finisher Sebastian Ortega (126) pulled Howell within 34-33 headed into Scafidi's bout.

Middletown North had built its 34-22 lead with a 16-6 run from 213-113 that was highlighted by pins by Lucas Ainbinder (215) and returning state qualifier Brady Klinsky (106) around a pin by Howell heavyweight Thomas Richards.

Howell's Kylie Gudewitz, who won the Shore Conference girls 114-pound championship at Monday held her opponent at 113 to a major decision. She has not gotten pinned in any of her eight bouts against the boys this season.

Returning district champion Gavin Merkel (165) and returning state qualifier D.J. Henry (190) also pinned for Howell.

Returning region fifth-place finisher Colin Oden (144), Matthew Castelli (157) and Christian Cueto (175) also pinned for Middletown North.

Southern will clinch the divisional title outright with a win over Toms River North on Feb. 1.

It is Shore's first divisional title since 2019 and ninth overall.

Keansburg closed to within 20-18 after a 4-0 win by William Huhn at 157 before Lucas White (165), Corey Norton (190) and Bashaar Ismail (215) during an 18-3 run over a four-bout stretch that enabled Shore to extend its lead to 38-22 and clinch the match with two bouts remaining.

Domenic Demarzo (120) and Trevor Doremus (106) also pinned for Shore.

Michael Burke (126), Dominic Terracciano (132) and Michael Menture (heavyweight pinned for Keansburg.

Lakewood 40, Brick 28: Marlen Castillo's pin in the final bout at 120 pounds clinched the Piners' the win over the Green Dragons.

According to Frank D'Esposito of the Web Site shoreconferencewrestling.com it appears is the first pin for a girl in a final bout that clinched a match in Shore Conference history.

Castillo also had a pin at 113 pounds in Lakewood's win over Hamilton West Wednesday night.

Castillo is 3-1 in Lakewood boys matches this season.

Holmdel 36, Pinelands 34: Freshman Alex Reyes' 4-0 win over returning region qualifier Gavin Wagner was the difference in the Hornets' win over the Wildcats (3-11). Holmdel is now 10-4.

Jackson Liberty 31, 8. Manalapan 29: Sophomore Jordan Aayash (150) defeated Vincent Kain 11-9 in the final bout to give the Lions (6-2) the win over Manalapan.

The result snapped Manalapan's 12-match winning streak.

Manalapan had grabbed a 29-28 lead heading into the final bout with a 13-point run from 132-144. Christian Spezio (132) pinned. Returning state qualifier Vincent DePierro (138) won by major decision and Anthony Mucciolo (144) won by decision.

A pin by freshman Tucker Pazinko (126) gave the Lions a 28-16 lead with four bouts remaining.

Jackson Liberty built a 9-0 lead with decisions in the first three bouts from 157-175.
