The Short Life and Death of Kanye West's Dome House Idea

Well, that was over before it really even began. Back in July, it was reported that Kanye West was bringing, as TMZ described it, "an incredible architectural concept to the hills of Calabasas." The incredible architectural concept being a slew of dome-like structures dubbed "Yeezy Home" that the rapper believed could be deployed as low-income housing units to help bridge the gap between social and income classes.

The 50-foot high domes were being built on West's 300-acre plot of land in Calabasas and, from the looks of it, were taupe in color and rather austere. In fact, according to Forbes, West was actually inspired by the bare aesthetic of Luke Skywalker’s childhood home on the planet of Tatooine in Star Wars.

“It’s my first community,” he told radio host Charlamagne tha God on a tour of the property. “I’m getting into development.”

According to Curbed Los Angeles, West was cited by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works for building without permits earlier this month and was told to either bring the domes into compliance, or tear them all down by September 15.

TMZ reports that West's crew never got the necessary permits to build the domes and was therefore told to halt the project by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office, after neighbors called in to complain about noisy construction at night.

This isn't West's first foray into attempted dome-construction. In January, Billboard reported that the rapper pulled out of the Coachella after senior executives of the desert music concert refused to build him a giant dome in the middle of the festival grounds.
