Welcome to The Esquire Endorsement. Heavily researched. Thoroughly vetted. These picks are the best way to spend your hard-earned cash.

Put your ear to the ground on Menswear World and you'll hear it: a low, incessant rumble. That, friends, is the sound of about a million dudes talking at once about the awesome power of a pair of shorts that can go anywhere. I'm not talking about the general versatility of, say, a pair of lightweight chino shorts that can transform from preppy to profoundly anti-prep with a few deft styling shifts, though those are great, too. What I'm talking about is a pair of shorts that can truly go anywhere: the ocean, the gym, the bodega, the bar, you name it.

These are the shorts that, upon packing for a vacation (remember those?) and realizing you're short on space, can fill the role of The One Pair of Shorts for the week. The ones you throw on when you've decided to head out for the day, but have no idea what that day will bring. They're tough but lightweight, quick-drying but not too bathing suit-y, and exactly what you need to make your entire summer easier. And Adsum's Site Shorts, part of the Brooklyn-based brand's latest collection, fit the bill.

They're built to last.

By way of context, here's a brief personal anecdote. A couple years ago, I bought a pair of lightweight nylon shorts that I loved dearly. Dearly, but briefly. After only a few wears I sat down on a rough-hewn wooden bench and tore a hole in the seat. This was, to put it mildly, a little disappointing. Adsum's shorts, though, are made from a densely woven, coated nylon that's specifically designed to stand up to abrasion. That's good for anyone sitting on rough-hewn wooden benches, sure, but also for folks who want to get out in nature, or plop down on a curb from time to time to chill and watch the world go by. In other words: everyone who wants to do summery things. In other other words: everyone.

They're water friendly.

While I advocate whole-heartedly for investing in some proper, purpose-built swimwear, I am also keenly aware of how easy it is to find oneself in the vicinity of a body of water without forewarning. I'm talking about those impromptu trips to the beach, or the stay at a hotel you didn't realize had a swimming pool, or the backyard barbecue with a sprinkler set up for the kids but, hell, it's hot and that looks like fun. These are the shorts you want to be wearing when these situations arise. They've got drainage holes so you don't get bogged down, zippered pockets so your (waterproof!) stuff doesn't float away, and a quick-drying fabric so you won't be soggy all day. The only thing they're missing is a mesh liner, which, if you're a boxer briefs kinda guy, might be welcome news.

They're perfect for Summer 2021.

Here's where the vibes come into play. Because there's something about these shorts that just feels right for right now. It's the color, for sure. The six-and-a-half-inch inseam and boxier cut, for another. The outdoorsy-ish but also kind of city-ish aesthetic, too. It's all of these things, plus a little je ne sais quois seasoning that makes the Site Shorts singularly suited to this moment. We're getting vaxxed. We're going back out into the world. We want to pull ourselves together but embrace the casual style we've all spent the last year-plus tuning to perfection. And these are exactly the shorts to do all of that and more.
